Grammar Spotlight / قواعد اللغة

The Verb "To Be" (I am) / فعل "يكون"

In Arabic, you often drop the verb "to be" in the present tense. You say أنا طالب (ana ṭālib = "I student") instead of "I am a student." But in English, you must always include the verb "am," "are," or "is"!

في العربية، غالباً ما يُحذف فعل "يكون" في المضارع. تقول "أنا طالب" بدون فعل. لكن في الإنجليزية، يجب دائماً استخدام الفعل "am" أو "are" أو "is"!

💡 "To Be" with I, You, He/She

Key Difference / الفرق الرئيسي

Arabic: أنا طالب (I student) — no verb "am" needed

English: I am a student — you MUST include "am"!

Tip for Arabic Speakers

P vs B sound: Arabic doesn't distinguish between P and B — both use the letter ب (bāʾ). In English, they are two different sounds! Practice: "park" vs "bark," "pen" vs "ben." Try this test: hold a tissue near your mouth. When you say P, the tissue should move (a puff of air). When you say B, it stays still. صوت P مقابل B: العربية لا تفرق بين P وB — كلاهما يستخدم الحرف باء. في الإنجليزية، هما صوتان مختلفان! تمرن: "park" مقابل "bark"، "pen" مقابل "ben". جرب هذا الاختبار: ضع منديلاً قرب فمك. عند نطق P يتحرك المنديل. عند نطق B يبقى ثابتاً.
